New Orleans – The French Quarter

On a sunny but cool day, the crew of the HMS Beagle set off to the port of New Orleans located beside the great Mississippi River about a half hour’s sail in the Captain’s yacht from the Beagle’s mooring in Slidell, Louisiana.  Captain Fitzroy and Master Chaffers had travelled to this port quite some years ago and enjoyed it thoroughly.  This would be a day trip to just one part of the city – the famed, and sometimes infamous, French Quarter.  Mr Darwin, never having been to New Orleans before, immediately found the local fauna absolutely transfixing and could not keep from loudly pointing out – and attempting to communicate with – these large creatures travelling the streets all around.  It seems that the French Quarter has a lively sightseeing trade whereby visitors from near and far are shown around the area in open carriages drawn by horses and mules.

The crew had a fine day touring the French Quarter, including a stop for lunch in a lovely courtyard restaurant, Cafe Amelie.  There were many buskers on the streets as well, including music, magic and dance.  The crew was able to capture some of this in the video below.
